I’m Going The Distance to help patients with cancer at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse.

For the month of August I’m taking part in the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse Go The Distance challenge, to help raise money for this remarkable facility in Camperdown, NSW.

Earlier this year I had a run in with cancer. I’m one of the lucky ones who had the surgery at lightning speed after something was found at my regular screening. I had the badness successfully removed from my breast, then zapped the heck out of my boob with 5 weeks of radiotherapy. The impact of my journey has been quite profound on me. I am so incredibly grateful for the amazing care and support I’ve received from the remarkable team at Lifehouse. I want to give something back. Whilst it’ll only be a small contribution, every little helps with running this phenomenal facility and supporting excellent care and research.

The Go The Distance challenge acknowledges the vast geographical area and distance that folks travel to Lifehouse to receive their treatment and care. I live very close to Lifehouse and each day of my 5 week radiotherapy treatment I’d make the 5km round trip with my partner on foot. Being able to walk, often at a slower pace than my usual pavement speed, was important to my mental and physical health and something I was determined to do, come rain or shine. We’d often comment on our trundle about how fortunate we are to be able to walk to my treatment at such an amazing facility. I’d overhear others at Lifehouse talk about coming across town on a couple of buses or even from regional areas. It’s a tough enough journey, never mind having to contend with a daily commute, reliant on public transport or staying in a hotel, away from home and the support of family and friends.

For this challenge I’ll be swapping my walking shoes for my little push bike (Kitty) and she’ll be my companion. I’m aiming to cycle 250km and raise $500. I want to do more, but I have to be realistic with juggling a full time job and not being 100%.

I’ve arrived at these numbers from:

5 km round trip walked every day of my radiotherapy treatment = 125km. I can cycle more given my regular commute to work distance, so I’m being bold and doubling it.

250 km is the target for my challenge, so let’s double that for the amount I’m hoping to raise, $500!

I’m not at peak fitness, still returning to full strength after my treatment, my boob is still a little plump and doesn’t like to wobble like it used to and I’m slow to recover from a recent bout of Covid. Nonetheless I’m committed to doing something, to help others.

I’ve always felt uncomfortable asking folks to sponsor me, as supportive as a sponsor as I try to be for others. It feels awkwardly self indulgent, but this challenge somehow feels a bit closer to home.

The world is getting more expensive, but if you can afford to and would like to, I’d be very grateful of your support. Cancer isn’t going to beat itself, only we can help beat it and support those going through what is a very unsettling time in a high quality care facility.

Thank you x

Go the distance and beyond....

Tuesday 16th Aug
On day 15 I hit my target of 250km! I'm chuffed to bits with myself and what I have achieved to help Chris O'Brien Lifehouse and patients with cancer. I have more in the tank and more days to conquer it, so I'm going for another 250km by the end of August, 500km in total!

At the time of signing up to this challenge 250km felt like a stretch with my fitness and the year I've had. It also felt realistic to not let my sponsors down. I'm so motivated by my cheer squads encouragement and donations that I feel I can give some more to help an amazing cause. If I make it great, if I don't then I tried and achieved what I set out to do, smashing my distance and fundraising target on the way. This extra 250km is the cherry on the top to try and raise more funds.

Thank you so much to all who have supported and sponsored me on this challenge, named or anonymous. It means an awful lot. There is still time to give, if you can.
